7 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route
There are six established routes to climb Mount Kilimanjaro – Marangu, Machame, Lemosho, Shira, Rongai, and Umbwe. The Marangu, Machame, and Umbwe routes all approach from the south of the mountain. The Lemosho and Shira routes approach from the west. The Rongai route approaches from the north near Kenya. All routes except Marangu and Rongai descend via Mweka.
The Lemosho Route on Mount Kilimanjaro, a newer route, is more remote and arguably more beautiful, though it is a bit longer and slightly more expensive. Starting on the western side of the mountain at the Londorossi Gate, this route was introduced as an alternative to the Shira route. After traversing beautiful forests and moorlands, it crosses the Shira Plateau on day three to connect with the Machame Route at Lava Tower and descends towards Barranco Valley via the Southern Circuit. Hikers may be lucky enough to see buffalo, elephants, and other wildlife. Because this route allows for a longer period of acclimatization, it has a higher summit success rate.
- Duration: 7 – 8 days
- Difficulty: Medium
- Scenery: Excellent
- Traffic: Medium
LEMOSHO ROUTE ELEVATIONS

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be met and transferred for overnight accommodation at The Maridadi Hotel B&B. Your head guide will meet you for your briefing, gear check, and to arrange for you to hire any equipment you may need.
- Elevation: 2389m/7838ft to 2785m/9137ft
- Altitude gained: 396m
Departing from Moshi, a 3-hour drive will take you through welcoming mountainside villages to the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate. While waiting for permits, enjoy the beautiful rainforest scenery and winding trails as your guide shares insights about the local flora, fauna, and wildlife. At these lower elevations, the trail can be muddy and slippery, so gaiters and trekking poles are highly recommended.
- Elevation: 2785m/9137ft to 3895m/12779ft
- Altitude gained: 1110m
After a good night’s sleep and a hearty breakfast, we emerge from the rainforest and continue on an ascending path, leaving the forest behind. The trail climbs steadily with wide views, reaching the rim of the Shira Plateau. Temperatures begin to drop as we gain elevation.
- Elevation: 3895m/12779ft to 3986m/13077ft
- Altitude gained: 91m
This day is crucial for acclimatization despite ending at a similar elevation. From the Shira Plateau, we continue east up a ridge, passing the junction towards the Kibo peak. We then head southeast towards the Lava Tower, called the “Shark’s Tooth” (elev. 4650m/15250ft). After the tower, we descend to Barranco Camp for the night.
- Elevation: 3986m/13077ft to 4034m/13253ft
- Altitude gained: 48m
After breakfast, we climb the steep Barranco Wall and descend into the Karanga Valley. This is one of the most impressive days, showcasing the agility and strength of the crew as they navigate the challenging terrain. Overnight at Karanga Camp.
- Elevation: 4034m/13253ft to 4662m/15295ft
- Altitude gained: 628m
We continue up to Barafu Camp, completing the South Circuit, which offers breathtaking summit views from various angles. An early dinner and rest are essential as we prepare for summit night. Overnight at Barafu Camp.
- Elevation: 4662m/15295ft to 5895m/19341ft
- Altitude gained: 1233m
- Descent to 3090m/10150ft
- Altitude lost: 2789m
Excitement builds as we start early between midnight and 2 a.m. This is the most challenging part of the trek. We ascend through heavy scree towards Stella Point on the crater rim. After a brief rest and witnessing a magnificent sunrise, we make the final ascent to Uhuru Peak. After celebrating at the summit, we begin the descent to Mweka Camp. Overnight at Mweka Camp.
- Elevation: 3106m/10190ft to 1633m/5358ft
- Altitude lost: 1473m
After breakfast, we descend to the Mweka Park Gate to receive summit certificates. The terrain can be wet and muddy, so gaiters and trekking poles are recommended. A vehicle will drive you back to your hotel in Moshi. Enjoy a well-deserved hot shower, dinner, and celebration. Overnight at The Maridadi Hotel B&B before continuing your journey home, going on safari, or relaxing in Zanzibar.
