Mount Kilimanjaro Machame Route
Mount Kilimanjaro has six established routes: Marangu, Machame, Lemosho, Shira, Rongai, and Umbwe. The Machame route, also known as the Whisky Route, is one of the most scenic and recommended routes, providing paths through magnificent forests, moorland zones, and beneath the Southern Ice fields. It offers a high success rate due to its manageable incline and longer duration options.
- Duration: 6 or 7 days
- Difficulty: Medium
- Scenery: Excellent
- Traffic: High
The Machame Route, also known as the “Whiskey Route,” is longer and steeper than the “Coca-Cola Route” (Marangu), providing superior acclimatization and higher success rates. Ideal for a seven-day trek, it accommodates those new to high-altitude hiking. Experienced climbers can challenge themselves with the six-day option.
Embrace the adventure with the Machame Route for an unforgettable Kilimanjaro experience. Starting at Machame Gate (1,800 meters), offers a captivating journey to the Roof of Africa. Begin your adventure through a majestic rainforest, ascending to Shira Camp where it meets the Lemosho Route. Traverse Kilimanjaro’s southern side via Lava Tower to Barranco, then conquer the Great Barranco Wall on your way to Barafu Camp. Summit success leads to a descent via the scenic Mweka Trail.
